For this project, I was to design a window display for The Co-operative Funeralcare, Addlestone branch. I was to make the company appear more friendly and to take away the element of fear and caution a funeral directors shop usually has. My designs were also to be eye catching, christmassy and neutral to the public. This meant that my design had to appeal to all religions, so I could not include any pictures of the cross for example. My design also had to include a phrase which linked my design to a funeral directors, ‘Merry Christmas’ would not be suitable as it has no relevance to funerals and all associated.

My solution started with me creating a series of pictograms that represented christmas, but had no link to religion. I then went on to create bauble shapes with the pictograms.

AVAILABLE TO VIEW IN THE BOOKS SECTION ON THE LEFT.

This is a book I re-designed for a client. Her name is Debra and Chat-room is the result of a project that took place online in a live Chat-room; whereby the artist engaged in dialogue with users and, drew their portraits during each interview. The project enabled the artist to gain private and intimate details of the characters portrayed, which otherwise would not normally be divulged to a complete stranger. Here the lines of intimacy and privacy become blurred between the simulated world and the world of physicality. The saying, “nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors”, comes to mind when one looks at society; ordinary people about their ordinary lives appear to be just that, ordinary and unassuming. Many of those the artist engaged with were just that; daring to express their darker sides in the virtual world, where they feel safe to do so and, where they will not be judged.

Tilt-Shift Photography series (Continued).

Tilt–shift photography refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene. Sometimes the term is used when the shallow depth of field is simulated with digital post-processing; the name may derive from the tilt–shift lens normally required when the effect is produced optically.

“Tilt–shift” encompasses two different types of movements: rotation of the lens plane relative to the image plane, called tilt, and movement of the lens parallel to the image plane, called shift. Tilt is used to control the orientation of the plane of focus (PoF), and hence the part of an image that appears sharp; it makes use of the Scheimpflug principle. Shift is used to adjust the position of the subject in the image area without moving the camera back; this is often helpful in avoiding the convergence of parallel lines, as when photographing tall buildings.

These were my solution to the Penguin Design Award brief 2011.

Brief:

We are looking for a striking cover design that is well executed, has an imaginative concept and clearly places the book for its market of both children (to pick up and buy for themselves) and adults (to buy for children). While all elements of the jacket need to work together as a cohesive whole, remember that the front cover needs to be able to work on its own and be eye-catching within a crowded bookshop setting.

The winning design will need to:

have an imaginative concept and original interpretation of the brief
be competently executed with strong use of typography
appeal to the broadest possible audience for the book
show a good understanding of the marketplace
have a point of difference from the many other book covers it is competing against
be able to sit on the shelves of a supermarket as easily as it sits on those of more upmarket bookshops such as Waterstone’s
